I had the honour of helping to craft 2022’s Festival of Remembrance. With a full variety of content from 3D rendering to 2D animation, picture collages to archive footage. All had to be made to work effortlessly across a total of 7 screens with extreme aspect ratios and a mix of projection and LED. We wanted not just to create beautiful backgrounds but to tell stories, to support the performance and heart-breaking testimonials with something crafted, well thought out and memorable. Allowing for the unpredictability of live performance we created content in sections and overlays that finished in loops, living holds and even some back-up footage.

Starting with the most significant asset the Poppy. We looked create something that respected the graphic paper poppy whilst moving it into a slightly more realistic world. Blending real poppy texture’s and modelling some elements I got to a place that both felt graphic but also had some beautiful detail and texture which looked incredible on the large main IMAG screens in the Royal Albert Hall.

2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict so was one of the main themes if the festival. Tackling this part of the job was emotionally challenging but very rewarding. We were dealing with real letters written home from the Falklands and our task was to bring them to life whilst they were read live by the author or relative. Projecting a slowed turbulent and mesmeric sea onto the floor I built a transition layered into the sea to have the supporting archive imagery float up and return to the depths in time to the read. Where we could we used the original letters and projected those over the top.
